English 5 - Concarán - Prof. Walter Acosta / Leo Márquez

Hello guys! How are you today?

Are you ready for another online lesson?

If you complete today's lesson, you'll learn how to use Conditional Sentences, for example! 🙋

So let's go!

You'll work on the following two pages from your student's book.

GRAMMAR: CONDITIONAL SENTENCES TYPE 1

When we think something is possible to happen in the present or future, we can use a type 1 conditional sentence.

Conditional sentences consist of the if-clause followed by the main clause

Look at this sentence.

If go  to the supermarket this afternoon, I'll buy some chocolates.

The if-clause is a condition.
The main clause is a result.

(In Spanish, we express this in a similar way:
Si voy al super esta tarde, voy a comprar bombones.)

You can use Type 1 conditional sentences to make predictions or express plans:

Structure

Examples:

If the weather is good tomorrow, we'll go swimming. ("WILL" here means you're certain)
If the weather is good tomorrow, we might go swimming. ("MIGHT" here shows possibility, NOT certainty)
If the weather is good tomorrow, visit the local river! (IMPERATIVE: strong recommendation)

(In Spanish, we express this in a similar way:
Si el tiempo está lindo mañana, vamos a ir a nadar.
Si el tiempo está lindo mañana, puede que vayamos a nadar.
Si el tiempo está lindo mañana, andá al río de acá.)

What's the difference between these two sentences? Read the sentences and complete the rules.

a) If  go  to the supermarket this afternoonI'll buy some chocolates.
b) When  go  to the supermarket this afternoonI'll buy some chocolates.

Rules: IF or WHEN?
In sentence _______ you might go to the supermarket.

In sentence _______ you will definitely go to the supermarket.

(In Spanish, we express this in a similar way:
Si voy al super esta tardevoy a comprar bombones.
Cuando vaya al super esta tardevoy a comprar bombones)

Hey guys, how are you? Hope you're all safe and healthy!😃

In today's lesson, you'll study a grammar topic that we could not cover last class: 👉 👉 PASSIVE VOICE 👈 👈

Finally, we'll work with UNIT 5e.

Let's get started!

EXERCISE 1: VIDEO ACTIVITY

Before you watch the videos, look at these sentences (student's book, page 69) and do ex.A.

Watch these video tutorials on the Passive Voice

Video 1
This is a video which is very easy and clear. Please, skip (= saltear) the section on "pronouns," ya que esta parte no es esencial para aprender Passive Voice, sino el resto del video. 🙈

Video 2: a little more advanced!

Finally, read this section from your student's book!

EXERCISE 2: PRACTICE

Do ex.4 on page 69 in your student's book.

.....................................................................................................

UNIT 5 e "That's not funny"

The following sentence contains an IDIOM. Can you recognise it?

I'm all ears. Tell me everything you know!

So... what is an idiom?
Read a dictionary definition of "idiom":

idiom: a group of words in a fixed order that have a particular meaning that is different from the meanings of each separate word.

Look at these illustrated idioms. Can you guess their meaning?  Do we have similar expressions in Spanish?

Watch this short video that will guide you through unit 5e.

Hello, class! How are you today? Hope you're all safe and healthy!

Are you ready for another lesson?

OK, let's get started!

In today's lesson, you'll work with unit 5d (student's book pages 68 & 69)

EXERCISE 1: DISCUSSION / READING

Discuss the questions

  • How do you get the news?

Examples:
I watch the news on TV.
     I buy the newspaper.
     I read magazines.
I read the news online (on my computer or my mobile phone)

  • Do you know of any serious recent transport accidents?
  • Look at the pictures. What do they show? Label the pictures with the following words / phrases:
train - tracks - passengers - firefighters - put out a fire - a flock of sheep - injured / hurt (adjective - use them for people) - go through a tunnel - train driver - damaged (adjective - use it for things)

  • Read the headline (=titular) of the newspaper article (page 68). What do you think it is about? Read the article and check your answers.

  • Now read the article and then write T, F or NM (true, false or not mentioned).

  • Finally do ex.D (page 69) - (Find specific words in the article)

EXERCISE 2: VOCABULARY - Confusing words

1) damaged VS injured

The house was DAMAGED because of the hurricane. (=use "damaged" for things that get broken or partly destroyed in an accident, for example)
The people were INJURED because of the hurricane. (=use "injured" for people who have an accident)

2) survived VS rescued

3) look - watch - notice

look: direct your eyes to see (=mirar)
Dad! Look at me!
I looked at her and she was very sad.

watch: look at something for a period of time, especially something that is changing or moving. (=mirar)
I love watching TV / concerts / football matches.

notice: become conscious of something / someone

English 5 - Concarán Prof. Márquez / Acosta

Hi there!
Welcome to your next online lesson!

Today you'll learn:
  • how to talk about FEARS
  • how to give ADVICE
  • how to write a LETTER / EMAIL asking for / giving advice
Let's get started!

EXERCISE 1: Vocabulary

When we talk about fears, we can use a few adjectives:

I'm afraid / scared / frightened of spiders.

OR you can use the noun "fear":

I have a fear of spiders.

What are YOU afraid of?

Open your student's book at page 66. Do the exercise there. Here you need to pay attention to CONTEXT.

In the second text above, there's the expression "deal with". This means to do something because you want to find a solution to a problem or because you want to get a certain result.

Example:

I have a terrible allergy. What can I do to deal with it?

Discuss:

How do you deal with your fears?

EXERCISE 2: Grammar - Giving advice

When a friend has a problem, you usually give them some advice, right? Well, there are different ways to give advice in English, and you can use different structures:

A: I'm scared of spiders!
B: Sorry about that. You should read some information about spiders. They are not all dangerous!

So, when you give advice, you can use SHOULD and HAD BETTER.

So you can say:

You should stay home. OR You'd better stay home.

Meaning
"Had better" is more EMPHATIC than "should.")

Structure
In BOTH cases, you use the infinitive without "to".
You usually use " 'd better" in the contracted form.

To make a sentence negative, add "NOT":

You should NOT go out.
You'd better NOT go out.

If you need more information, please read this grammar reference. 👇

EXERCISE 3: Grammar practice

Now do ex 3 (page 66) in your student's book.

EXERCISE 4: Listening

Discuss these questions.

What kind of fears do people have?
Are you scared of anything?
How do you react when you're scared?

Before you listen, guess the meaning of these phobias.

Listen and check.

Now listen again and complete the sentences. You can use numbers or words (one or more words)! ;)

EXERCISE 5: Speaking

The following will give you conversation practise, BUT you'll do it over the phone! ;) I'll explain how on Whatsapp.

Ok, guys, thanks for stopping by and don't forget to always practise a little bit, step by step!

Bye for now!

Take care! Stay home. Stay safe.

English 5 - Concarán - Prof. Walter Acosta / Leo Márquez

Hello guys, how have you been?
Hope you're very well and ready to move on to unit 5b!
(You've already received the answers to the previous lesson on whatsapp, but if you have any questions, please let us know.)

So, let's go aheady and get started.

EXERCISE 1: VOCABULARY & DISCUSSION

1) Look at the following images. What do they have in common? What do we use each thing for?

2) Have you ever been in an emergency situation? How did you react? How did you call for help? What happened in the end?

3)Read this definition of "distress":

"A situation in which you are suffering or you are in great danger, so you need help immediately."

So, if you are in an emergency, you can use distress signals to call for help. "SOS" is an example of a distress signal. 😏

EXERCISE 2: READING

1) The letters FIFA stand for "Fédération Internationale de Football Association." What do you think SOS stands for? Please work with the article on page 64 in your student's book, about different signals. Were you right about the meaning of SOS?

2) Read again and choose a,b, or c in exercise C.

3) For vocabulary exercise D (page 65), find the following words in the reading text and match them with their meanings, a - f:

Paragraph 1: "signal"; "location
Paragraph 2: "stand for"
Paragraph 3: "government"
Paragraph 5: "upside down"
Paragraph 6: "crew"

EXERCISE 3: VOCABULARY

Prepositional phrases with IN.

In English, it's very important to learn not just single words, but phrases, such as IN DANGER or IN AN EMERGENCY.

Read the phrases in exercise 2 (page 65) and try to complete the sentences. If you have any questions, please ask one of us or you classmates in your Whatsapp group.

EXERCISE 4: GRAMMAR

"-ING FORM"

So far, you have studied the INFINITIVE. Now, you're going to focus on another form of the verb: "-ING FORM"

1) Look at these examples:

1 - I love singing in the shower.
2 - Sleeping 8 hours is highly recommended.
3 - I'm interested in learning more about this new virus.
4 - can't stand doing my English homework.

Now match the example sentences with 4 different uses of the -ING form of a verb, a - d.

We use the -ing form:
a) after certain verbs (e.g. like, hate, etc.)
___________

b) after cerain expressions (e.g. I don't mind, It's worth, etc.)
___________

c) after prepositions (e.g. about, at, for, etc.)
___________

d) in SUBJECT position
___________

Now look at this complete grammar explanation, which gives you a lot of other examples of when to use the -ING FORM of a verb.

2) Now do the exercises in ex.4 on page 65 in your student's book.

Ok, that's the end of this lesson. Remember you can write your comments below and always try to share your opinions with your classmate by sending a voice note on Whatsapp, so you can practise speaking and communicating in English.

Bye for now!

English 5 - Concarán

Hello there! How are you? Hope this finds all of you very well.

As you know, due to the current situation, we won't see each other for a while, and so classes will be held online until the end of March.

So, how about doing some warming up to get started?

EXERCISE 1: Health Problems

Last class, we talked about health problems and you studied some vocabulary to talk about health problems, symptoms and treatment. Discuss these questions about Coronavirus! 😃

  • What are some common symptoms of the illness?
  • What should we do if we catch the virus? (treatment)

EXERCISE 2: Video activity

INFINITIVES

1) Before you watch the video, let's recap on the 2 types of infinitive. Read the sentences and decide which one has an example of

a) full infinitive
b) bare infinitive

  1. It's easy to study English online.
  2. We should practise our English a lot.

2) Watch the video explaining 5 different cases in which we use the full infinitive (=infinitive with TO). Then say which case the following sentences illustrate:

  1. It's too difficult to memorise her name.
  2. I'm going to the market to get some flowers.
  3. Grammar is really easy to understand!
  4. Is she studying to become a teacher?
  5. We need to work harder to improve our pronunciation.

3) Study the following examples of the bare infinitive (=infinitive without TO). Then complete the rules below.

  1. Our teachers make us work very hard each class.
  2. Please, Mum, let me do my homework later.
  3. You should study with some relaxing music on.

Rules:

We use the bare infinitive after the verbs _________ and _________ .
We use the bare infinitive after AUXILIARY verbs, such as _________, can, will, etc.

4) Finally, open your student's book at page 64 (exercise 4) to practise using the correct infinitive form.

Here's a very complete grammar explanation, showing when to use each type of infinitive. Hope you find it very useful!

That's all for now!

Hope you'll find it easy to remember when to use the FULL and BARE infinitives!

Please remember to do your corresponding homework in you workbook, as usual.

Bye for now!
