English 5 - Concarán - Prof. Walter Acosta / Leo Márquez

Hello guys, how have you been?
Hope you're very well and ready to move on to unit 5b!
(You've already received the answers to the previous lesson on whatsapp, but if you have any questions, please let us know.)

So, let's go aheady and get started.

EXERCISE 1: VOCABULARY & DISCUSSION

1) Look at the following images. What do they have in common? What do we use each thing for?

2) Have you ever been in an emergency situation? How did you react? How did you call for help? What happened in the end?

3)Read this definition of "distress":

"A situation in which you are suffering or you are in great danger, so you need help immediately."

So, if you are in an emergency, you can use distress signals to call for help. "SOS" is an example of a distress signal. 😏

EXERCISE 2: READING

1) The letters FIFA stand for "Fédération Internationale de Football Association." What do you think SOS stands for? Please work with the article on page 64 in your student's book, about different signals. Were you right about the meaning of SOS?

2) Read again and choose a,b, or c in exercise C.

3) For vocabulary exercise D (page 65), find the following words in the reading text and match them with their meanings, a - f:

Paragraph 1: "signal"; "location
Paragraph 2: "stand for"
Paragraph 3: "government"
Paragraph 5: "upside down"
Paragraph 6: "crew"

EXERCISE 3: VOCABULARY

Prepositional phrases with IN.

In English, it's very important to learn not just single words, but phrases, such as IN DANGER or IN AN EMERGENCY.

Read the phrases in exercise 2 (page 65) and try to complete the sentences. If you have any questions, please ask one of us or you classmates in your Whatsapp group.

EXERCISE 4: GRAMMAR

"-ING FORM"

So far, you have studied the INFINITIVE. Now, you're going to focus on another form of the verb: "-ING FORM"

1) Look at these examples:

1 - I love singing in the shower.
2 - Sleeping 8 hours is highly recommended.
3 - I'm interested in learning more about this new virus.
4 - can't stand doing my English homework.

Now match the example sentences with 4 different uses of the -ING form of a verb, a - d.

We use the -ing form:
a) after certain verbs (e.g. like, hate, etc.)
___________

b) after cerain expressions (e.g. I don't mind, It's worth, etc.)
___________

c) after prepositions (e.g. about, at, for, etc.)
___________

d) in SUBJECT position
___________

Now look at this complete grammar explanation, which gives you a lot of other examples of when to use the -ING FORM of a verb.

2) Now do the exercises in ex.4 on page 65 in your student's book.

Ok, that's the end of this lesson. Remember you can write your comments below and always try to share your opinions with your classmate by sending a voice note on Whatsapp, so you can practise speaking and communicating in English.

Bye for now!
