💬 What are Tom and Jay doing at this moment?  They are studying for an exam at the moment.

As you see, in the answer we are not using "Present Simple". Why?  ↠  because the answer is about an action that is taking place, happening at the moment the people are speaking. This verb tense is called
"PRESENT CONTINOUS"!

Let´s first see in which situations we use Present Continous.

💬 Is it clear when we use Present Continous? Well, now let´s study how we construct Positive and Negative sentences in present continous.

So the structure for Positive sentences is:  SUBJECT ⍆Verb TO BE ⍆ Verb/ING
Negative sentences:     SUBJECT ⍆ Verb TO BE  not  ⍆ Verb/ING

What do the people talk about?    →  FOOD!

Acitivity 1 a -  Look at the pictures and write the names of the food you can see. Use the dictionary when necessary.

b- Countables vs. Uncountables:   Remember that we said that nouns can be countable or uncountable. Now, put each noun of the image under the correct category "Countable"  or "Uncountable".

💬  Now look at the fridge....

⇨ What food can you see in it?

Can you see any carrot?     Yes!  There are SOME carrots.
Can you see ANY coke?  No, there isn´t ANY coke.

INGLÉS Nivel 2 (gr 3) - Villa Mercedes

Class 3:   16/03

WELCOME TO OUR VIRTUAL CLASSES!

Warm-up:   Today we will start with a revision of the grammar topic and vocabulary covered in Unit 4. You will choose a place that you know well, and make a description of it using the expressions "There is/There are" and the vocabulary learnt about "Places in a City". Once you have finished, send it to my e-mail address rominagrdin@ulp.edu.ar  for correction.

Activity 2: Starting Unit 5A. Go to page 64 of the Student´s Book and take some minutes to read the text in exercise 2. Once you have finished, answer the questions in 2B.  What do the people talk about?  They talk about their eating habits; they talk about FOOD!

To start learning vocabulary about Food, you will look at the pictures in the following image and write the names of the different types of food using the dictionary when necessary.

Now, which nouns do you think you can count and which ones you can´t?  For example, take the word "Coffee", is it countable or uncountable?  and the word "Apple"?
´Coffee´ is an uncounable noun as it is a liquid, like the words milk, water, tea, beer, etc and it is always in a singular form; whereas, the word´Apple´ is a countable noun like tomatoe, cherry, eggs, etc and it can be used in singular or plural form.

To make this topic clearer to you, I´m attaching a document in which you will learn examples of nouns you can count (Countable nouns) and nouns which you can´t count (uncountable nouns).

So, we can say that Uncountable Nouns are:

Now, let´s analyse the Countables side:  👉How many tomatoes are there? →There is one tomatoe,  or you can say:  There is a tomatoe .
So, it means that we can use the Indefinite article "A" for singular countable nouns that start with a consonant.

but... 👉 how many oranges are there? →There is one orange, or there is an orange. Why did I use AN in this answer?  because the word ´orange´starts with a vowel.

Let´s do some exercise!   Complete the sentences with "A or An".

That´s all for today. See you next class and don´t forget to contact me in case you have doubts.
