English 5 - Concarán - Prof. Walter Acosta / Leo Márquez

Hello guys! How are you today?

Are you ready for another online lesson?

If you complete today's lesson, you'll learn how to use Conditional Sentences, for example! 🙋

So let's go!

You'll work on the following two pages from your student's book.

GRAMMAR: CONDITIONAL SENTENCES TYPE 1

When we think something is possible to happen in the present or future, we can use a type 1 conditional sentence.

Conditional sentences consist of the if-clause followed by the main clause

Look at this sentence.

If go  to the supermarket this afternoon, I'll buy some chocolates.

The if-clause is a condition.
The main clause is a result.

(In Spanish, we express this in a similar way:
Si voy al super esta tarde, voy a comprar bombones.)

You can use Type 1 conditional sentences to make predictions or express plans:

Structure

Examples:

If the weather is good tomorrow, we'll go swimming. ("WILL" here means you're certain)
If the weather is good tomorrow, we might go swimming. ("MIGHT" here shows possibility, NOT certainty)
If the weather is good tomorrow, visit the local river! (IMPERATIVE: strong recommendation)

(In Spanish, we express this in a similar way:
Si el tiempo está lindo mañana, vamos a ir a nadar.
Si el tiempo está lindo mañana, puede que vayamos a nadar.
Si el tiempo está lindo mañana, andá al río de acá.)

What's the difference between these two sentences? Read the sentences and complete the rules.

a) If  go  to the supermarket this afternoonI'll buy some chocolates.
b) When  go  to the supermarket this afternoonI'll buy some chocolates.

Rules: IF or WHEN?
In sentence _______ you might go to the supermarket.

In sentence _______ you will definitely go to the supermarket.

(In Spanish, we express this in a similar way:
Si voy al super esta tardevoy a comprar bombones.
Cuando vaya al super esta tardevoy a comprar bombones)
