English 5 - Concarán - Prof. Walter Acosta / Leo Márquez

Hello, class! How are you today? Hope you're all safe and healthy!

Are you ready for another lesson?

OK, let's get started!

In today's lesson, you'll work with unit 5d (student's book pages 68 & 69)

EXERCISE 1: DISCUSSION / READING

Discuss the questions

  • How do you get the news?

Examples:
I watch the news on TV.
     I buy the newspaper.
     I read magazines.
I read the news online (on my computer or my mobile phone)

  • Do you know of any serious recent transport accidents?
  • Look at the pictures. What do they show? Label the pictures with the following words / phrases:
train - tracks - passengers - firefighters - put out a fire - a flock of sheep - injured / hurt (adjective - use them for people) - go through a tunnel - train driver - damaged (adjective - use it for things)

  • Read the headline (=titular) of the newspaper article (page 68). What do you think it is about? Read the article and check your answers.

  • Now read the article and then write T, F or NM (true, false or not mentioned).

  • Finally do ex.D (page 69) - (Find specific words in the article)

EXERCISE 2: VOCABULARY - Confusing words

1) damaged VS injured

The house was DAMAGED because of the hurricane. (=use "damaged" for things that get broken or partly destroyed in an accident, for example)
The people were INJURED because of the hurricane. (=use "injured" for people who have an accident)

2) survived VS rescued

3) look - watch - notice

look: direct your eyes to see (=mirar)
Dad! Look at me!
I looked at her and she was very sad.

watch: look at something for a period of time, especially something that is changing or moving. (=mirar)
I love watching TV / concerts / football matches.

notice: become conscious of something / someone

I waved (=le hice señas) at her but she didn't notice.

Now you should be ready for an exercise! 🙉

EXERCISE 4: GRAMMAR - Passive Voice

I will explain this in MORE DETAIL on Whatsapp! (=explicaré en detalle)

When you finish reading this grammar section, please do ex. 4 (page 69) to practise using the Passive Voice.

OK, guys, that'll be all for today.
