English 5 - Concarán

Hello there! How are you? Hope this finds all of you very well.

As you know, due to the current situation, we won't see each other for a while, and so classes will be held online until the end of March.

So, how about doing some warming up to get started?

EXERCISE 1: Health Problems

Last class, we talked about health problems and you studied some vocabulary to talk about health problems, symptoms and treatment. Discuss these questions about Coronavirus! 😃

  • What are some common symptoms of the illness?
  • What should we do if we catch the virus? (treatment)

EXERCISE 2: Video activity

INFINITIVES

1) Before you watch the video, let's recap on the 2 types of infinitive. Read the sentences and decide which one has an example of

a) full infinitive
b) bare infinitive

  1. It's easy to study English online.
  2. We should practise our English a lot.

2) Watch the video explaining 5 different cases in which we use the full infinitive (=infinitive with TO). Then say which case the following sentences illustrate:

  1. It's too difficult to memorise her name.
  2. I'm going to the market to get some flowers.
  3. Grammar is really easy to understand!
  4. Is she studying to become a teacher?
  5. We need to work harder to improve our pronunciation.

3) Study the following examples of the bare infinitive (=infinitive without TO). Then complete the rules below.

  1. Our teachers make us work very hard each class.
  2. Please, Mum, let me do my homework later.
  3. You should study with some relaxing music on.

Rules:

We use the bare infinitive after the verbs _________ and _________ .
We use the bare infinitive after AUXILIARY verbs, such as _________, can, will, etc.

4) Finally, open your student's book at page 64 (exercise 4) to practise using the correct infinitive form.

Here's a very complete grammar explanation, showing when to use each type of infinitive. Hope you find it very useful!

That's all for now!

Hope you'll find it easy to remember when to use the FULL and BARE infinitives!

Please remember to do your corresponding homework in you workbook, as usual.

Bye for now!
