Ok, here we go!

EXERCISE 1: GRAMMAR

SUBJECT AND OBJECT QUESTIONS

Read the following two different situations and write a question on each dotted line. (=en la línea punteada) 

SITUATION 1

You are a teacher and you overhear (=escuchás sin querer) part of a chat between two of your students:


"...broke that window today!"

And you really want to know the name of the person who broke the window. What question are you going to ask your students?

SITUATION 2

You are talking to your friend on the phone and, suddenly, you get disconnected. This is the only thing you could hear:



"And then Paul broke the......."

So, you want to know what Paul broke. What question are you going to ask your friend in this case?

ANSWERS:
Situation 1: Who broke that window?

Situation 2: What did Paul break?


So, in the frevious situations, the speakers asked two different types of questions. In situation 1, the teacher asked a subject question. In situation 2, one of the friends asked an object question.

But what is the difference between these types of questions?

Ok, first let's review two simple concepts in English: 

subject: this is the doer of the action
object: this receives or is affected by the action

Look at the sentence:

SUBJECT          verb       OBJECT
Paul                   broke      the window.

If you want to know the subject, you need to ask a subject question

  X      broke    the window.
  ↓
Who    broke    the window?

If you need to know the object / time / place / reason etc., then you must ask an object question.

Paul broke X.........................

What did Paul break the window? (object)
When did Paul break the window? (time)
Where did Paul break the window? (place)
Why did Paul break the window? (reason)


Difference in structure

SUBJECT QUESTIONS

Question word  +  main verb (=conjugated)  +  ?

👉These questions look like affirmative statements! There are NO auxiliaries like in object questions

Paul   broke   the window.
Who  broke   the window?

OBJECT QUESTIONS

Question word  +  aux (do, does, did, can, should, will, might, etc)  +  subject  +  infinitive + ?

👉These questions use AUXILIARIES, and the verb is in the infinitive (except in some verb tenses, but we will talk about this later).
